Ethan & Choco's Book Club

Striving to make access to books and reading a core part of the care that SuperKids receive in the hospital, with the principal premise that literacy support for children fighting cancer and other life-threatening conditions can help promote cognitive development and social connections that are part of thriving through treatment and beyond

ECBC at Miracle Manor

Ethan & Choco’s Book Club was so honored to be part of Miracles for Kids’ holiday party for CHOC patients and families living at Miracle Manor (a home subsidized by Miracles For Kids for low-income CHOC families with critically ill children). ECBC Board member and bedside reader Mary Kay provided an engaging holiday-themed storytime for the kids, and then along with Santa, Mary Kay passed out holiday book bags to all 33 patients and siblings living at Miracle Manor — with all bags containing two books curated by the age, gender, and interests of each child. We loved adding books and reading to these families’ holiday festivities (and how amazing that during the festivities, Miracles for Kids volunteers were busy decorating each of the family’s apartments for Christmas!). THANK YOU Miracles for Kids for letting Ethan & Choco’s Book Club participate in this magical event, thank you Mary Kay for making time to be there for the kids, and THANK YOU to all who donated holiday-themed books for the kiddos!

If you haven’t had a chance to donate a holiday book, ECBC is still running our December holiday book drive. Click HERE to donate.

Holiday Books for Miracle Manor!

ECBC was so thrilled to be able to deliver holiday book bags this week to CHOC patients and siblings living at Miracle Manor (Miracles for Kids’ subsidized housing for CHOC families). This was our third year gifting holiday books to Miracle Manor families, and while we missed not being able to host storytime with Santa or give the books to the kids directly, it is such a treat to be able to provide books that were curated according to every recipient’s specific age and interest. We gifted a Santa alphabet book, Christmas-themed princess books, holiday-themed popular graphic novels, JK Rowling’s new Christmas Pig and RIck Riordan’s newest book for a Percy Jackson fan, holiday drawing books, fancy encyclopedias about motorcross and Marvel Superheroes — and so much more! THANK YOU to all our holiday book donors, most of whom donate books on an ongoing basis which allows us to keep on helping hospitalized kids to thrive with books and reading!

Holiday Books for Miracle Manor!

ECBC was so thrilled to deliver holiday book bags to CHOC patients and siblings living at Miracle Manor. This was our second year gifting holiday books to Miracle Manor families, and while we missed not being able to host story time with Santa like we did last year, it is such a treat to be able to provide books that were curated according every recipient’s specific interest. We gifted titles ranging from Mickey House and Baby Shark to baseball, gaming, and fashion — and so much more! A huge thank you to Mary Kay and Claire Viscounty for assembling the beautiful bags as well delivering the books today. And thank you to Janis Leach’s 3rd graders for writing personal holiday notes for every recipient! And of course thank you to all our donors, most of whom donate books on an ongoing basis which allows us to keep on helping hospitalized kids thrive with books and reading.

ECBC’s First Holiday Book Donation of the Season

We just delivered our first of several holiday book donations to CHOC Children’s Hospital! This one went to the Outpatient Infusion Center, where kids (largely oncology patients) spend a couple hours to all day for infusions– we re-stocked our outpatient library cart with almost 200 December holiday-themed books! We just love spreading some literary joy with high-quality books that look fun enough to get kids to put their screens down for just a bit!

We have a few more holiday book gifting commitments in the coming weeks — including to CHOC’s inpatient side and to Miracle Manor (Miracles for Kids’ subsidized housing for CHOC patients and families). Our deadlines for delivery are coming up in the 10 -12 days and we’ll need to purchase books soon to fill gaps — so PLEASE donate now/soon if you can!!!

ECBC needs holiday books for kids living at Miracle Manor!

PLEASE HELP! ECBC needs some help so that we can provide literary treats for patients and siblings living at Miracle Manor, which is Miracles for Kids’ subsidized housing for CHOC patients (most of whom are currently battling cancer). Last year we were invited to attend their Christmas party, and we were thrilled to be able to provide storytime and books for every child living here. There’s no party this year per Covid, but we have promised the books! Our Miracle Manor wish list on Amazon has titles that have been specifically selected to match the age and interests of every child — we need every book on the list to be able to gift to every child! Delivery happens in 10 days — please help if you can! We also still need a huge number of books for our CHOC holiday book deliveries — see that link below too. THANK YOU for helping hospitalized kids to thrive through the holidays with books and reading!

30 Ways ECBC Helps Cancer Warriors Thrive Through Treatment: Day #9 of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Sept 9. The 9th way that ECBC helps kids thrive through cancer treatment is by gifting personally curated sets of books to patients and siblings at Miracle Manor’s December holiday party (Miracle Manor is a home subsidized by Miracles For Kids for low-income CHOC families with critically ill children). While it is unclear whether ECBC will be able to lead the storytime with Santa this year per Covid restrictions, we are super excited to be able to help Miracle Manor kids celebrate the holidays with beautiful high-quality literature.

To help fund the books needed for this, go to go to https://runsignup.com/BOOKIT2020 — $10 provides one gifting library books and $50 provides five gifting library books. THANK YOU for supporting BOOK IT and helping to honor cancer warriors during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month!

Please help ECBC provide books for kids at Miracle Manor’s holiday party!

PLEASE HELP! ECBC just agreed to participate in a new holiday event that is occurring in just a few days, and we’re looking for some support to pull it off!

On Friday December 6th, Miracle Manor (a home subsidized by Miracles for Kids for 12 low-income CHOC families with critically ill children) will be hosting a holiday event for their families, and ECBC was invited to provide storytime and books for all of the kids! Our goal is to provide two books for each of the approximately thirty children who live at Miracle Manor, with books picked out specially to match the ages, gender, and interests of each child. So, we are in need of some quick donations! You can help in one of these two ways: (1) donate via PayPal by clicking on HERE, or (2) donate a book off an Amazon wish list that ECBC created specifically for Miracle Manor kids (click HERE). Books bought off this list will go directly to ECBC with donor name written on the bookplate. We would SO appreciate your help so that we so we can provide specific titles that these children will be excited to read!

Also, ECBC needs holiday-themed books for our bedside reading program, to gift to patients in isolation, and for our annual holiday book give away event in the CHOC Children’s Hospital lobby. Please click HERE to buy books from this wish list!

THANK YOU for helping CHOC patients and families THRIVE through treatment during the holiday season!
