Ethan & Choco's Book Club

Striving to make access to books and reading a core part of the care that kids receive in the hospital, with the premise that literacy support for children fighting cancer and other life-altering conditions can help promote cognitive health and social connections that are part of thriving through treatment and beyond

Ethan and ECBC are in the newspaper!

fullsizerenderWe are so excited for today’s article about Ethan & Choco’s Book Club in the Orange County Register! Thank you to Theresa Walker for writing such a terrific article! Click HERE for the link to the online version

We didn’t manage to get our hands on a printed newspaper until this evening…and when we did, Ethan was so excited to see that he actually made the front page (I was pretty excited too)!! That was such a great surprise!!  img_5202

Because it’s not mentioned in the article, I’d like to acknowledge the amazing support of the organizations that have helped ECBC to get off the ground so far. We’re so grateful for Audra Wilford and the MaxLove Project, which has partnered with us to provide invaluable organizational support and is doing tremendous work to offer whole body wellness programs and anti-cancer nutrition that helps kids battling cancer to thrive through treatment and well beyond. I’d also like to acknowledge Susie Alexander and the Tustin bookstore Once Upon a Storybook , which has promoted, supported, and donated books to ECBC each month since our launching last December. We’re also grateful for the substantial book donations from Milk and Bookies, Barry Ackerman and Kids READ, PBS SoCal, Kris Mauger Allison and Burnham Benefits, and DOGObooks.com. And, we are grateful for the support of the Kiwanis Club of Irvine, as well as the Kiwanis clubs of Orange County for their initial donation and pledge of future support. Finally, thank you to Tod and Sharon Paris and the Adzich Family for your significant monetary donations, and all of the individual donors who have donated money and books over the past year. We’re so grateful for all of the donations thus far, and yet this is just the very beginning of a long-term effort! We will need significant ongoing monetary and new book donations in the months and years to come in order to create a sustainable library for hospitalized kids in Orange County. To donate money, you can visit our fundraising site at http://bit.ly/EthansBooks, and to donate new books, you can visit our wish list on Amazon at https://amzn.com/w/BLD7UEVPPPO.

Taking advantage of Being Inpatient and Bringing a Bit of ECBC to CHOC!

img_1098Since we launched fundraising efforts for Ethan & Choco’s Book Club in December 2015, we’ve been working hard to raise money, collect books, build awareness and make connections in Orange County, and coordinate plans for starting up in the hospital. Our first official ECBC event at CHOC is a launching party planned for December 9th, where we plan to give away new books, have a few local authors read aloud, and engage patients in book-related crafting. Our hope is that shortly thereafter, at the start of 2017, we will begin implementation of phase 1 in the hospital, which is “Reading Aloud in Every Room” — where trained volunteers will visit patient rooms to read aloud and promote literacy skills, conversations, and good thinking. After getting this initial phase off the ground, we hope to move quickly to phase 2, which will involve mobile book carts visiting patient rooms and the start of a Lending Library at CHOC. We are excited to finally be approaching a start date at CHOC!

oct-20-ethans-first-radio-show-bEthan unfortunately had to be admitted at CHOC on Tuesday due to a fever and critically low blood counts (his absolute neutrophil count is 0, meaning he has no ability to fight infection). It is his first time being inpatient since before we launched ECBC, and being here reminds him just how much books and reading are needed at the hospital. As always, he sees patients on screens and on devices — but it’s nearly impossible to see anyone with a book! While visiting the hospital radio station on Thursday (his favorite place to when he’s here), Ethan turned to me and said,”Mom, can I just do something for ECBC now, since I’m at the hospital anyway?” What a great idea — why not take advantage of us being here and get some books into kids’ hands, even if informal and impromptu?! So we made a plan with the radio station manager for Ethan to host a show, cleared it with Child Life, and I rushed home to get a pile of new books from our Gifting Library. And at 4:00 on Thursday, Ethan went on air at the hospital (which goes into patient rooms)!!  He introduced himself and the mission of ECBC, read aloud two of his favorite books, and showed off book titles that he was giving away. About 15 kids ended up coming down to the station to choose books, and afterwards Ethan gave away another 15 books to oncology patients on the 5th floor. Ethan says “it was so awesome” to finally get to share his love of reading at CHOC, and he can’t wait to do more! Per the invitation of the radio station manager, it looks like a regular radio show hosted by Ethan is in the works!img_1093 img_1104

ECBC Received Its First Gigantic Donation — From Milk & Bookies!

milk and bookies donation, 061416.This afternoon, ECBC received a tremendous donation of books from Milk & Bookies, an LA-based organization whose mission is to spread the love of reading to those who can’t afford books of their own. We haven’t yet unpacked the more than 30 boxes and 2000+ new books, but we’re so excited about our partnership with Milk & Bookies and for this significant donation!

For those who are not aware of the dual libraries that ECBC is aiming to build, ECBC is working hard to create both a Lending Library and a Gifting Library. The goal of the Lending Library is to create a comprehensive library collection for kids of all ages and interests, which includes high-quality literature, award winners, and a range of book types and topics so that patients of all ages, reading abilities, and interests can find books that are a good fit for them. We are working hard to obtain the titles that Ethan is featuring in his Book Looks as well as the rest on our Amazon Wish List so that we can have a collection of books that meets everyone’s needs.

That being said, there are always a good number of patients at the hospital who are “in isolation”, meaning they will not be able to visit the Lending Library or check out books from the lending library to their rooms. For these kids, we are building a Gifting Library that contains books to give away so that they also can have books in their daily lives at CHOC. While we can only have new hardcover books in the Lending Library, as well as a maximum of five copies per title, we have fewer restrictions for the Gifting Library (i.e., they can be paperback, we can have many, many copies of a given title). While we still need (and always will need) many many more books for both the Lending and GIfting libraries, these books are such a great start — and they mean that we now officially have a real “Gifting Library”!!

Thank you so much, Milk & Bookies!!  FullSizeRender

Ethan’s Daily Book Look #112

IMG_3636
What a great afternoon at Arroyo Elementary’s first Ripple Kids Fair! Ethan, his buddy Quinn, and Caleb sold ECBC merchandise for the first time to help build awareness in the community about our efforts to build a library program at CHOC. Ethan is so proud to be wearing his shirt — which makes all the difficulty of trying to start this up while still in active treatment completely worthwhile. Susie, the owner of our terrific local bookstore Once Upon a Storybook, brought books to our booth for people to purchase to donate — we are so grateful for our partnership with Susie. Maddy and her friend Ciara, as well as Avery, Sophie H., Colin H., and Sophie L. also made items to sell at the fair and are donating their proceeds to ECBC. Thank you friends for all your support, we’re so grateful for it as we’re trying to get Phase 1 of the program off the ground!  IMG_3639

Once Upon a Storybook Comes to Arroyo

Book table with Miss Susie, Arroyo Bingo NightTonight our local bookstore owner Susie Alexander teamed up with Ethan to provide a book table at Arroyo Elementary School’s Family Bingo Night. In one hour, Ethan & Choco’s Book Club (ECBC) received quite a few book donations — thank you Arroyo families who donated! And Ethan was so proud to be in “the public” with ECBC for the first time, collecting books and sporting our new ECBC t-shirts. We are so excited to be partnering with Susie and Once Upon a Storybook! Thank you Susie!

If you want to support ECBC as well as this fantastic bookstore, you can visit the store and purchase books to go in the ECBC collection basket. While you’re at it, if you have a child with you, Miss Susie is sure to be able to match your kid up with that “‘perfect book”!

51CoMgwaVHL._SY497_BO1,204,203,200_Our first batch of ECBC t-shirts came in the mail today! Ethan was so excited to see them and do his next Book Look wearing one. I love seeing his pride and ownership with this project — he really feels like he’s doing something special and like he has a significant role. We’ll have youth shirts on sale for the first time at the Arroyo Ripple Kids Fair next Thursday after school! IMG_3462

ECBC has an official logo…and Ethan’s Daily Book Look #81!

ECBC Logo, with MaxLove, colorSince we launched Ethan & Choco’s Book Club at the end of 2015, we’ve had a great logo that matches the branding style of all of the logos used by the MaxLove Project (MLP) and its various programs. We think this logo is fantastic, and it will continue to be used on the MaxLove Project website and whenever ECBC is promoted with MLP and alongside other MLP programs..  However, we also wanted a logo that is more aligned with Ethan’s vision (boy and CHOCO the bear reading a book together) and that looked like it belonged at CHOC Hospital. So our amazing neighbor and artist (check out his website here) met with Ethan to hear what he envisioned and designed a new logo for us, and we just received approval from the hospital’s marketing department. Ethan is very proud of this logo — a printout of it is already up on his bulletin board in his room. I think it (and this entire project) really represents the joy and good that has come out of this difficult road we are traveling on right now (aka Leukemia battle).

Welcome to ECBC’s blog!

Welcome to the Ethan & Choco’s Book Club (ECBC) blog. We’re so excited to be getting this launched, especially because so far we’ve only been able to reach family and friends on Facebook. This space will be used to share Ethan’s Daily Book Look videos, as well as updates and news related to progress we are making with ECBC. Please click the “follow” button on the right hand side if you’d like to receive email notifications when new posts are published. And we’d really appreciate it if you would share this blog with as many people as you can so we can spread the word and build more support!

ECBC officially became a new MaxLove Project program in the fall of 2015.  The MaxLove Project is an amazing nonprofit organization that helps Superkids thrive against cancer and life-threatening conditions  with programs and resources that support lifelong healthy survivorship. ECBC’s mission is to help kids thrive through treatment and beyond by making access to books and reading a core part of the care that SuperKids receive in the hospital. Our goal is to build a fantastic library for patients at CHOC Children’s in Orange County, to implement high-quality read-aloud programming, and to provide additional reading-based and educational experiences that help them think, learn, and connect with others. You can click here to learn more and click here to read the story behind the founding of ECBC. Here’s a quick overview of key progress that we’ve made in the first few months since launching ECBC:

  • Summer 2015. The kids’ held a  lemonade stand last summer before Ethan & Choco’s Book Club officially came to be, and they were proud to be the first to donate money to the program.

    First dollars raised!

  • 10.14.15.  ECBC was announced at the First Annual MaxLove Project Farm to Fork Dinner. ECBC was on the pledge card as an option for donation, and it was really cool to see our vision and dream for the hospital officially printed on MaxLove materials.

  • 11.23.15.  We launched the ECBC fundraising website, with an initial goal of 10K for phase 1 of the program.Click here to watch Ethan’s launching video, and Click here to check out the site, donate, or start your own fundraising team.
  • 12.04.15. Susie, the wonderful owner of Tustin’s local children’s bookstore Once Upon a Storybook, became ECBC’s first community supporter. She started a book donation basket for ECBC at the store’s front desk, and customers have been donating books ever since. In months of January and February, ECBC received approximately 100 books from her customers. We are so grateful for this collaboration!

Ethan’s happiness upon hearing the news about the green light from CHOC

12.16.15.  Just three weeks after we initiated fundraising efforts, we hit our initial goals of $10,000!!  Ninety-eight percent of these donations came from family and friends, whom we are so grateful for in helping us to get started! We also received an official and enthusiastic green light from CHOC Children’s to move forward with ECBC at the hospital, and we upped our phase 1 fundraising goal to $20,000. And, that day we created and launched a Facebook page for ECBC. Click here to view the green light video and here to visit ECBC’s Facebook page.

  • 12.30.15. We transferred most of the funds raised thus far for ECBC to the CHOC Foundation at the hospital to start a fund for ECBC with Child Life. This helps to create a more formal collaboration between ECBC and hospital, will allow for easier purchasing of items and execution of projects, and opens up donation possibilities to donors who want to give directly to the hospital.
  • 1.1.16. We launched Ethan’s 2016 Daily Book Look Challenge — which is Ethan’s commitment to make (and post) a video plea for a specific book title for EVERY day of 2016 (click here for Book Look launching video). We also created a wish list on Amazon of books that we want donated to the library. Every day since January 1, we have shared videos on social media asking for a specific. A link is always published to the Amazon wish list, so that potential donors can click on the link, select a book to purchase, and it will be sent directly to ECBC. Despite side effects from daily chemo and often not feeling week at night, and despite numerous nights when Mom and Dad have wanted him in bed rather than attempting yet another video take, Ethan is committed to his goal and has thus far made and shared 70 Book Look videos. Check out the collection of Book Look videos here!
  • 03.02.16. We received confirmation from CHOC Hospital that we have secured a great space at the hospital for the Ethan and Choco’s Book Club library! This space is a larger starter space than we expected…so now we really need to step up our book donations!!
  • Here are a few special videos that we’ve posted in the past couple of months: (1) videos from January 15, January 30, and March 1 with thank you messages to our book donors; (2) a special read-aloud done by Ethan on World Read Aloud Day; and (3) another special read aloud by Ethan on Read Across America day as well as the announcement we we officially received a library space at CHOC.

Please help us get phase 1 implemented in the hospital by this summer by donating books, money, or sharing this page with your community! We are so committed to creating a fantastic library program at CHOC Children’s that will hopefully someday become a model for libraries at children’s hospitals across the country!
