Ethan & Choco's Book Club

Striving to make access to books and reading a core part of the care that kids receive in the hospital, with the premise that literacy support for children fighting cancer and other life-altering conditions can help promote cognitive health and social connections that are part of thriving through treatment and beyond

BOO-KS for Treats

Annually on Halloween, ECBC hosts “BOO-ks for Treats”, where CHOC patients and siblings trick-or-treat for new, Halloween-themed books. BOO-KS for Treats includes:

  • patients and siblings dressed up and trick-or-treating for books!
  • the gifting of approximately 400 new books for patients of all ages.
  • high-quality Halloween-themed books of all kinds, including board books, picture books, learn-to-read books, easy chapter books, Halloween joke books, middle grade chapter books, teen and young adult fiction, YA horror, nonfiction/informational Halloween-related factual books, coloring books for kids and teens, and Halloween activity books.

This is a special event for ECBC co-founder Ethan, who was diagnosed with Leukemia on October 28th (2014) and began his chemotherapy on October 31, while still getting to dress up and trick-or-treat in the hospital. In 2014 there were no books at this event, so Ethan is proud to be able to provide books on Halloween as part of ECBC’s regular programming. ECBC has been hosting BOO-ks for Treats for eight consecutive years (as of October 2024) and gifted a total of approximatly 4,000 new Halloween books. We are so grateful to all donors who support Ethan’s annual Halloween book drive as well as the local philanthropic groups who step up each year to host their own book drives.
